The Farm

G&F is a large macadamia plantation in Gurué Mozambique. The land is about 830 hectares: that’s about 1600 soccer fields next to and behind each other. A large part of this is not cultivate because it is quite hilly and we have a natural forest with Eucalyptus trees.
However, about 300 hectares are now being used to grow Macadamias, this is equivalent to about 80,000 trees.

In 2023, we introduced bee colonies to the plantation. The staff were trained to work with the colonies. A total of 250 beehives were delivered, of which 145 were colonized in the first season.

Bees offer many benefits to macadamia cultivation. During the blossom period, bees pollinate the flowers. Good pollination results in more and higher quality nuts. Studies in other countries have shown that proper pollination can increase the harvest by 25 to 30 percent.

Bees do not adhere to human-imposed boundaries. Indirectly, farmers in the surrounding area will also benefit from the bees. Additionally, the bees generate extra income from honey and beeswax.

We chose mobile beehives so that the bee colonies can be deployed on different plots of the plantation. This increases the impact of the colonies, as they pollinate more trees. At the same time, this extends the season and allows beekeepers to harvest more honey.
